Hello, I am Dominic Wong. I’m a multi-disciplinary Interaction Designer with the outlook of crafting experiences through investigating, engaging and connecting intricate issues through a user-centered approach.

My creative background started with traditional art as I’m not the typical Asian that excels in math. Painting, sketching, scribbling, and doodling served as my expression and communication of ideas.

Throughout the Interaction Design program at Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology, my understanding of “design” theory and knowledge was reinforced through hands-on application and in-field contextual experiences.

I believe any type of design should be purposeful, intuitive, and people-centered because the essence of design is emotionally connected to the quality of life.

I love public spaces (especially piazza’s and squares) because it opens up possibilities for people under different circumstances, lifestyles, and cultural traditions to creatively use the space, and through their interactions in time, shape a picture of the community. I enjoy observing people and the realization that design, and the response to design, is embedded into everyday things.

I’m the guy that, to ensure clarification, would brave the embarrassment to ask “stupid” questions. Guaranteed to give my best, I’m also prepared to own up to any mistakes, constraints, and challenges that arise. Although I’m perceived to being overly critical, I’m constantly soaking in inspiration from the world and experiences around me.

Sometimes you can expect awkward situations with me. Sometimes.

Key Experiences that Shaped Me

Traditional Art & Being Introduced to Photoshop

A foundation was built from fine art courses, learning composition methods, experimenting with different mediums and developing a particular style and creative process. Being introduced to Photoshop from a friend propelled my desire to do “digital” graphics at that time – messy collages and vector drawings.

Interaction Design concentration in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology

I was taught the importance of knowing your audience and stating the problem. Courses in the ID stream emphasized teamwork and focused on concept design, iteration processes, research and development, implementation, and proposal presentation. I learned that Interaction Design goes beyond just web graphics and that our role as Interaction Designers are to use meaningful, creative means to facilitate interaction between real people with real needs.

Italia Design Field School

I was exposed to a different culture through ItaliaDesign. I learned that history and time plays a part in the quality of design and embraced doing design work passionately from the experience and time spent with architects and industrial designers who devoted their whole lives to their work. I also embraced siestas.

Freelance Partners

Developed a large network of individuals to connect and work with to ensure delivery of the best solution for the client. Worked with realistic deadlines, constraints and accommodated to client feedback.

EQQY Group

EQQY provided me opportunities to develop client relations, understand their needs, and lead the creative development of internal and client projects from start to finish. I also worked closely with developers to learn their requirements, system limitations, expectations from designers, and work process. My role enabled me to move away from graphic/design duties and into administration and management-related responsibilities.
